Hurricane Milton is rapidly approaching Florida, bringing with it dangerous tornadoes and prompting urgent evacuation warnings from authorities. At least three tornadoes have already been reported, with one heading towards a major interstate. Residents are being urged to leave immediately as the storm intensifies. NASA has released a dramatic time-lapse video showing the massive scale of the hurricane from space, drawing comparisons to catastrophic storms depicted in films. Coastal areas like Marco Island are already experiencing rough surf and high winds as the storm nears landfall.

This is exactly what happens when we ignore the climate crisis for decades. We've been warned over and over that rising global temperatures would lead to more intense storms, yet corporate interests and fossil fuel lobbyists continue to block meaningful legislation. Now we’re seeing hurricanes like Milton supercharging themselves, spawning tornadoes and forcing mass evacuations. We spend billions recovering from these disasters, but almost nothing preventing them by transitioning to sustainable energy. How many more natural catastrophes will it take for us to realize that the earth doesn’t negotiate with profit margins?

This is exactly why we need to take climate change more seriously and invest in stronger infrastructure for these communities. The government needs to prioritize sustainable solutions and disaster preparedness, instead of just reacting to crises like this over and over again.

It’s heartbreaking to see these extreme weather events become more frequent and intense thanks to climate change. We need to prioritize bold environmental action now before disasters like this become the new normal.
It's frustrating to see how every time a disaster like this happens, the most vulnerable people are left scrambling while the wealthy can easily evacuate and stay safe.
While I feel for the people affected by the storm, it's frustrating to see the government stepping in with forced evacuations. People should be free to assess their own risk and decide for themselves whether to stay or go.

Natural disasters like this need to be handled with a strong, coordinated response from both state and federal levels. It’s not about politics at this point—it’s about making sure people are safe and that resources get to where they're needed quickly. People should definitely take these evacuation warnings seriously, but we also need better infrastructure in place to deal with these storms in the long term. Hopefully, the government is learning from each of these situations and planning ahead for the future.
