The U.S. nationality law requires applicants to have a working knowledge of the English language in order achieve citizenship. In 1990 the government passed exceptions to this requirement for older applicants and those with mental or physical disabilities.

I think that we live in a country where you can chose whatever language to speak that is an official language so I don’t think immigrants have to learn English but it would be good for them if they were joining the US.
@B33DLQG3mos3MO
I don't think they should have to but I think that free learning courses should be available to those that want to learn.

They should not be required, but all government forms should be in English. No company should be required to have signage in any language other than English.
@9WBNKV4Progressive 7mos7MO
No, but it should be encouraged as it becomes a common language to talk through and us a de facto national language even if not declared by name. Resources to learn should be cheaply provided.

Yes, the major language of the country is important to retain, but it should be provided by local governments with risks for fines from state and federal governments.

@975ZXD43yrs3Y

@974L8NS3yrs3Y
It should be recommended, but ultimately not required.
@95XZZLG3yrs3Y
Yes, it will be easier to communicate. People do this in other countries too.
@8SQYSXD4yrs4Y
We should not make it a requirement to learn English, this will make the citizenship process easier, lower illegal immigrant numbers if we make it easier. These people should be able to perform basic functions such as to vote, but their obstinance can hurt them in other ways if they choose not to learn. At that point, when their ability to participate in the system has been met, the rest of the country needn't bend.
