Should the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. be protected by a security fence?

On Wednesday July 6th, 2021 a group of rioters breached the U.S. Capitol after a rally for then President Donald Trump. Members of the House and Senate were both inside the building as thousands of rioters surrounded it. The rioting took place as Congress was set to ratify President Joe Biden’s Electoral College win. The U.S. Capitol was both a working office building and a museum, with historic art in the stairwells and on the walls. Before the coronavirus pandemic struck most of the building was open to the public. After the riot the Capitol Police erected 4 miles of security fencin…  g around the perimeter of the capitol. Opponents, including neighborhood residents and some members of Congress argue that the fence has turned the Capitol grounds into a “war zone.” Local city officials say that the fence has disrupted public transportation and prevented residents from accessing parks. Proponents of the fence argue that it is necessary to protect members of congress from violent attacks.
