Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles deployed by U.S. defense and intelligence agencies to collect data and strike suspected enemy targets. Between 2022 and 2020 the U.S. killed between 9,000 and 18,000 enemy combatants and 900-2200 civilians with drone strikes. Opponents of drone strikes have long contended strikes that kill civilians essentially serve as a recruiting poster for terrorist groups. In 2010, a man named Faisal Shahzad tried and failed to bomb Times Square in New York City. Later, Shahzad cited US drone strikes as his motivation for the failed bombing. Proponents of drone strikes argue that they can kill high value w=enemy targets without putting soldiers into combat.

Russia ramped up its deep strikes into Ukraine on Wednesday with a volley of missiles aimed at Kyiv and a northeastern border area, ending a more than two-month pause in such attacks on the capital, the Ukrainian air force said.The missile bombardment came as Russian forces sought to press their advantage in both soldiers and firepower across the eastern front. Ukraine’s military on Wednesday reported a wave of aerial bombing targeting its troops holding a pocket of Russian territory near the northern border that was captured last summer.As air raid alerts wailed in Kyiv around 6 a.m. and civilians headed for hallways or basements for safety, the Ukrainian air force said it was tracking 96 aerial targets entering the country’s airspace. That included missiles, ending an unusual 73-day pause in Russia’s use of the weapons to strike civilian and military targets in the capital.The air force said four missiles were aimed at Kyiv and two were short-range missiles fired into the northeastern border area.In Kyiv, explosions rang out early Wednesday and the authorities said air defense systems were firing at incoming missiles and drones.In the attack, Russia synchronized the arrival in the capital of fast-flying ballistic missiles and slower-moving cruise missiles, a common tactic. The Kyiv city military administration initially said North Korean-made Hwasong ballistic missiles, which Pyongyang has provided to Russia, may have been used. But Ukraine’s air force later reported that two Russian-made Iskander-M ballistic missiles were shot down.

North Korean Soldiers Slaughtered in Ukraine

At least 30 North Korean troops, deployed to bolster Russian forces in their war in Ukraine, have been wounded or killed in Russia’s Kursk region, Ukrainian authorities said Monday, a significant turning point after months of speculation over what role Pyongyang’s troops might play in the war.Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, known as GUR, announced the casualty number Monday. The Pentagon later said it has “indications” that North Korean troops “have suffered casualties, both killed and wounded.”Three Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the Kursk region, where Kyiv seized a swath of territory in August, described waves of what appeared to be North Korean troops flooding the battlefield in full view of Ukrainian drones and other weaponry in recent days. Two said they witnessed North Korean troop movements in real time via drone and a third, who oversees reconnaissance in the region, reviewed extensive drone footage captured by fellow troops.A separate Ukrainian military official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence, confirmed that North Koreans have appeared on the battlefield in Kursk in recent days and said another battalion of North Korean troops is gathered in Russia’s neighboring Belgorod region but has not been deployed to the front. Ukrainians are waiting to see whether that battalion is sent to reinforce positions in Kursk or if it will assault Ukraine from a different direction, including potentially inside the Kharkiv region, which borders Belgorod, the official said.
