The Lieutenant Governor's primary role is to support the Governor in executing state laws…   and overseeing the operation of the state government. They often have specific duties assigned by the state constitution or statutes, such as presiding over the state Senate, serving on boards and commissions, or overseeing specific areas of state government. In some states, the Lieutenant Governor is also the President of the Senate and can cast a vote in case of a tie.

In addition to these duties, the Lieutenant Governor often serves as an ambassador for the state, representing the Governor and the state government at official functions, public events, and ceremonial occasions. They may also play a role in promoting the state's interests, attracting businesses, and fostering economic development.

The office of the Lieutenant Governor is typically elected, either on a joint ticket with the Governor or separately. The term of office varies from state to state, but it is commonly four years. Some states impose term limits on the Lieutenant Governor, while others do not.

In terms of succession, the Lieutenant Governor is usually first in line to assume the Governorship in case of a vacancy. This can occur if the Governor dies, resigns, is impeached, or is unable to perform the duties of the office. In such cases, the Lieutenant Governor may serve out the remainder of the Governor's term, or until a new Governor is elected.
