Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has officially launched her campaign for the U.S. Senate, becoming the first major Democrat to enter the race to replace retiring Senator Dick Durbin. Durbin, a longtime Democratic figure, recently announced he will not seek reelection after nearly three decades in office. Stratton, who has served alongside Governor JB Pritzker since 2018, is positioning herself as a champion for the middle class. Her early entry is expected to set the stage for a competitive Democratic primary. The race is likely to attract significant attention as more candidates announce their intentions.

Juliana Stratton Launches Campaign for U.S. Senate, Promising to Center ‘Middle Class’
For too long, the middle class has been centered on the campaign trail but sidelined when it comes to real governance,” newly announced U.S. Senate candidate Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton said.

Really excited to see Juliana Stratton step up—she’s been a strong advocate for working families in Illinois and brings some fresh energy we need in the Senate. I’m hoping she pushes for real progressive policies and not just more of the status quo.

Honestly, I’m pretty excited to see Juliana Stratton throw her hat in the ring for Senate. She’s been a solid partner with Pritzker, and I think her focus on the middle class is exactly what Illinois—and the country—needs right now. With Durbin retiring after such a long run, it’s a big moment for some fresh leadership and new ideas. Stratton’s record on criminal justice reform and equity issues has always stood out to me, and it’d be awesome to see that energy in the Senate. Of course, the primary is probably going to get crowded, but I think a woman of color leading the ticket could really inspire a lot of voters. Illinois deserves someone who gets what working families are going through. I’ll be watching to see who else jumps in, but for now, Stratton’s got my attention.
I really hope Stratton backs bold policies like Medicare for All and a Green New Deal instead of just the usual “middle class” talking points. Illinois needs a Senator who’ll actually challenge corporate power and put working people first, not just keep things business as usual. Let’s see if she’s ready to fight for real democratic socialism, or if it’s just more centrist promises.
