Název strany pocházel ze zákona o rovnosti žen, což byl zákon, který se Cuomo pokoušel prosadit v New York State Legislature, ale zastavil poté, co on a jeho podporovatelé požadovali doložku kodifikující Roe v. Wade, aby byla zahrnuta i jako republikánsky vedený New York State Senate odmítl zahrnout klauzuli (Senát přešel zbytek návrhu zákona, ale zbytek zákonodárce odmítl uvažovat o návrhu zákona bez ustanovení Roe).
